Built-in engine console variables
Built-in engine console variables are already registered by Unreal Engine or engine plugins. Use them for rendering, scalability, performance, and platform settings such as r.VSync, r.ScreenPercentage, and sg.ShadowQuality.
Do not create a Blueprint console variable to change a built-in engine console variable. Configure the console variable through Unreal's config and scalability systems.
Set engine console variable defaults
Set general engine console variable defaults in DefaultEngine.ini under [SystemSettings]:
[SystemSettings]
r.MyCvar=2
Unreal applies these values during engine startup. Auto Settings can then capture the console variable's current value as the setting default if no Setting Type default or saved value overrides it.
Set scalability console variable defaults
Unreal owns the baseline defaults for scalability console variables such as sg.ShadowQuality and sg.TextureQuality.
